<条件>

“Possibility of Changing Residence Status from ‘Student’ to Another Visa Category”
Previously, we introduced that if your Japanese proficiency is N3 or higher, it is possible to change your residence status from ‘Student’ to ‘Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services.’ So, what about those with N4 or lower?
(1) Conclusion
For individuals with Japanese language proficiency below N4 level, changing their residence status from “Student” to “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” is extremely difficult.
However, even with limited Japanese ability, if the person has graduated from a university in their home country and has a suitable job offer in Japan, a change to “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” may be possible.
Requirements:
📌 The field of study at the home country’s university must be related to the job duties in Japan
📌 A formal employment contract with a Japanese company (e.g., full-time or contract employee)
※ During screening, lifestyle and behavior in Japan are also evaluated. Excessive absences or poor conduct may negatively affect the outcome.
(2) Options for Those Who Strongly Wish to Stay in Japan (Even with N4/N5 Level)
🔲 Designated Activities (Up to 1 year, with possible extension)
📌 Graduation or expected graduation from a vocational school in Japan
📌 Even without graduation from a Japanese school, graduates of foreign universities with a job offer from a Japanese company may qualify
📌 A recommendation letter from the school is required
📌 Must show actual job-hunting efforts
📌 After passing the Specified Skilled Worker exam, switching to “Specified Skilled Worker” status is possible
🔲 Dependent Visa
📌 If the spouse is legally residing in Japan
🔲 Long-Term Resident / Spouse of Japanese National, etc.
📌 Based on family ties or special circumstances
【Example】Raising a child who is a Japanese national, permanent resident, or long-term resident
🔲 Short-Term Stay Visa
📌 Temporary stay up to 90 days
📌 Employment is not permitted
🔲 Re-entry Plan After Returning Home
📌 Return to home country and re-enter Japan under a different residence status (e.g., work visa, technical intern, specified skilled worker)
🔲 Specified Skilled Worker
📌 Graduation or expected graduation is required (current students are generally not eligible)
📌 Must have a job offer and employment contract
📌 The employer must be part of the “Specified Skilled Worker” system
📌 Must pass both the skills and Japanese language exams for the designated industry (e.g., nursing care, food service, construction)
📌 Certificate of passing is required at the time of residence status change
